The 2009 NFL draft had a few surprises for Vegas Sharps in it’s top-10. The #1 overall draft pick Matthew Stafford came as no surprise but the
Jets trading DE Kenyon Coleman, S Abram Elam, QB Brett Ratliff along with the #17 and #52 selection to the Browns to select QB Mark Sanchez, opened some eyes. Tyson Jackson being selected 3rd overall was also considered a major reach by many. Love ‘em or hate ‘em here are the top-10 selections broken down by the Vegas Sharps NFL Draft experts.
1. Detroit Lions: QB Matthew Stafford - The rocket-armed Stafford signs for the most guaranteed money in NFL draft history. Has all the physical tools but some question his pocket awareness.
2. St. Louis Rams: LT Jason Smith - Super athletic lineman known as a worker with Pro-Bowl potential. Should lockdown the left side of a leaky Rams line for the next 5+ years.
3. Kansas City Chiefs: DE Tyson Jackson - The most versatile of the DL in the draft was projected by some as low as a 3rd round pick. Is a solid pass-rusher with an outstanding motor at 290+ lbs.
4. Seattle Seahawks: OLB Aaron Curry - Excellent player against the run and in pass-coverage. Explosive and aggressive but has only average instincts.
5. New York Jets: QB Mark Sanchez - Jets trade up to grab the 2nd best QB prospect in the draft. Is known as a leader with a great arm and football brain. Has limited experience in college but lots of upside.
6. Cincinnati Bengals: OT Andre Smith - Talented but risky selection due to weight and technique problems. Powerful run-blocker that may be better as a right tackle. Fills top priority on offense.
7. Oakland Raiders: WR Darrius Heyward-Bey - Has blazing 4.27 speed and good size but is only an average route runner. Considered a reach at this spot but gives Raiders offense a much needed deep-threat.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: LT Eugene Monroe - Jags Swiss cheese O-Line gets instant upgrade with a dominant player. Considered a strong character player that is equally effective in run and pass blocking.
9. Green Bay Packers: DT B.J Raji - Not a top priority but best prospect at position. A game-changer that should be a run-stuffer in the middle. Not very quick or much of a pass-rusher but is a smart player.
10. San Francisco 49ers: WR Michael Crabtree - Excellent football player that is big, strong and excellent after the catch. Has so-so speed but knows how to get open and was projected as top WR.
